The World Cup final brought thousands of football fans to Berlin, with many keen to see the sights, including Cold War relic Checkpoint Charlie, before enjoying the match.

Many arrived without tickets and were desperate to find someone with spares.

With France and Italy vying for the trophy, their fans were trying to outdo each other in the fashion stakes too.

For others, style was never a consideration.

The home fans have had to revise their ambitions - and many of their songs - and aim to be "Weltmeister" in 2010 instead.

French supporters had most to cheer early on, as Zinedine Zidane put them in front, and they continued to play the more attacking football.

But with no clear winner the final went to penalties, and nervous fans could barely watch.

It was tight but the match was sealed as Italy buried their fifth and final penalty and Italian fans were overjoyed.

The Roman legions celebrated a famous overseas victory - their fourth World Cup, and first since 1982.

Some French soon joined in the party but others were clearly in no mood to celebrate.
