Buckingham Palace was transformed into a fantasy land of children's literature characters on Sunday, with Winnie the Pooh among those celebrating the Queen's 80th birthday. Mr Toad, from The Wind in the Willows, arrived in fine style in a vintage motorcar. Postman Pat strode down The Mall as thousands of onlookers - and lucky guests - thronged the route. The Wombles of Wimbledon entertained the children. Cast members from the Harry Potter films were also joining in with the fun. There was plenty of swashbuckling action from pirates for the children to enjoy. Pc Plod, meanwhile, joined guardsmen, to patrol the palace's forecourt as guests assembled. The Countess of Wessex was among Royals who joined in the fun with the menagerie. The Queen spent time talking to children at the party before making a speech at the end of the televised play. Classic characters like Punch and Judy were also there to keep the children happy
