Sir Jimmy Savile presented the first ever Top of the Pops on 1 January 1964. The BBC has announced it is to scrap the show after 42 years.

In its heyday, in the 1970s, Top of the Pops attracted audiences of 15 million.

Dave Lee Travis, pictured with Sir Jimmy, was host from 1972 to 1984. After hearing of the show's demise, he said the BBC "forgot to keep the fun element" of the programme.

Madonna's performances were often highly choreographed and energetic, as in this 1984 show when she sang Holiday.

Ian Brown, lead singer of the Stone Roses, performs in 1989. He went on to launch an equally successful solo career.

The Spice Girls appeared on the show during their height of their popularity in the 1990s.

Pop favourites Steps wowed the Top of the Pops crowd with their dance routines.

Fearne Cotton, who is a current presenter, has also hosted spin-off show Top of the Pops Saturday.

Pop Stars: The Rivals winners Girls Aloud are among the acts to have performed on the show in more recent years.
