Clashes between Kurds and riot police in the mainly Kurdish south-east of Turkey have left several people dead. The protests began following the funerals of 14 suspected Kurdish rebels killed in an army operation. Three children have been among those killed during several days of unrest, two of them with gunshot wounds. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned parents not to let their children get caught up in the protests. Thousands of riot police have been deployed in the provincial capital, Diyarbakir, and the town of Batman. Security forces have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds throwing stones and petrol bombs. A Kurdish separatist group detonated a bomb in Istanbul, killing one, in what it said was a response to the violence. The EU has expressed concern over the unrest and urged Turkey's government to improve the cultural rights of Kurds.
