An estimated one million people have flocked to Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for a free concert by rock legends The Rolling Stones.

On stage, the Stones - who recently played at the Super Bowl - treated fans to a selection of new hits and old favourites.

The crowd was among the largest ever to attend a single event, with beachside waters almost as packed as the sands.

Frontman Mick Jagger played to crowd, stripping down to a t-shirt emblazoned with the Brazilian flag.

The show transformed the Copacabana into a spectacle of light, and more than 6,000 police were on duty.

Earlier, music lovers relaxed on the beach as they prepared for the start of the show.

Souvenir sellers who set up in the shadow of the gigantic stage did steady business all day long.

The apparently ageless band, who are on a world tour, played 20 songs including Jumpin' Jack Flash and Satisfaction.
