Kate Middleton is celebrating her 25th birthday as speculation mounts she will become engaged to Prince William later this year.

The pair met in 2001 when studying at St Andrews University, Fife. They shared accommodation during their four years at university and went on holiday together.

She attended the exclusive Marlborough College before studying art history in Scotland.

Kate Middleton is the eldest daughter of Carole, left, and Michael Middleton, who run a mail order toy business.

They were pictured in several tabloid newspapers beside Prince Charles at the Swiss ski resort of Klosters in 2005.

Miss Middleton quickly became a fashion trendsetter, wearing high street clothes as well as designer outfits.

Kate Middleton was a guest at Sandhurst when William was commissioned as an officer in the British army.
