Portuguese firefighters are combating brush fires that have spread through northern and central Portugal. The fires may have been started deliberately. The blazes come as Portugal has been enduring its worst drought in decades. The biggest fire was near Albergaria-a-Velha, about 250km (155 miles) north of Lisbon. The fires forced the closure of several roads. People tried to beat back the flames closing in on their homes with water. Higher temperatures are expected later in the summer.
