The Millennium Dome in south-east London will reopen in April 2007 as an entertainment venue. The building has been renamed the O2 to reflect the mobile phone company's sponsorship.

The centrepiece of the Dome's redevelopment is an indoor arena capable of seating 23,000 people. Organisers hope it will host up to 150 events a year.

According to plans announced on Wednesday, the Dome structure will also contain a smaller music venue with a capacity of more than 2,000 people.

Developers hope the Dome will also house bars, restaurants, retail units and leisure facilities.

There are also plans for a new exhibition space, to be housed in a bubble-shaped structure reportedly modelled on the Eden Project in Cornwall.

The Dome opened in 2000 but failed to attract the 12 million visitors expected. Since then taxpayers have paid more than �30m to maintain the building.
