Costumed performers took part in London's annual New Year's Day parade, now in its 20th year. About 10,000 people from around the world took part. Cheerleader troupes kept the crowds around the city entertained. Bands added to the atmosphere as the procession followed its two-mile route from Parliament Square to Piccadilly. Clowns took to the streets, as well as giant inflatable cartoon characters, mods and rockers and vintage cars. And the parade marched on despite damp London weather.
