Fans in New York - where John Lennon was shot on 8 December 1980 - laid flowers in remembrance. Others paid tribute with instruments at Strawberry Fields, an area of New York's Central Park turned into a permanent tribute to the former Beatle. One of the floral tributes was around the title to Imagine, the solo John Lennon song which became a hit across the world when it was re-released after his death. In Lennon's hometown of Liverpool, the Beatle's face lit up buildings near the city's historic Albert Dock as darkness fell. Various images of Lennon were shown in the city where the singer was born during a German air raid in 1940. Back on ground level, tributes were also paid at The Cavern, which remembers the historic venue The Beatles used to play in. In Japan, fans paid tribute at a Beatles museum in the northern city of Saitama. Candles were lit in remembrance to Lennon, who was shot by deranged fan Mark Chapman. Some fans - like New Yorker Danny Flores - went to more painful lengths to show their love for the Beatle who called New York home in his latter years.
