Up to one million Senegalese Muslims have been gathering in the holy city of Touba for their annual pilgrimage, the Magal.

They are members of the Mouride sect, which has a philosophy of "work hard, pray hard". Mourides dominate Senegal's trade and peanut sectors.

Many traders on the streets of Paris, Italy and New York are Mourides and they try to return home for the Magal.

Like Mouridism, Touba was founded by Cheikh Amadou Bamba, who tried to resist France's colonial advance in the 19th century.

The Baye Fall are a Mouride sub sect, famous for growing dreadlocks and wearing multi-coloured gowns. Despite being Muslims, they openly drink alcohol and smoke cannabis.

The Baye Fall also going into trances, during which they hit themselves with big wooden clubs.

Fears of cholera, which has infected some 1,400 people in Touba in recent months, have not affected the number of worshippers. As Touba is an Islamic city, this poster uses Arabic lettering instead of Latin script.

Poor hygiene is one of the main reasons for the spread of cholera but some Mourides say it would be a blessing to die in Touba.
