Doctor Who took the most honours at the National Television Awards. Billie Piper collected her most popular actress prize from Tory leadership candidates, Davids Davis and Cameron. The sci-fi series, which returned this year after a 16 year gap, also won the most popular drama award, with outgoing Doctor Christopher Eccleston winning the actor prize. Jamie Oliver won a special recognition award for his series Jamie's School Dinners, which also took the most popular factual show prize. Asked about his black eye, he would only say he did not get it while drunk. The EastEnders cast celebrated their most popular serial drama award after a year which has been dogged by off-screen scandals and ratings lows. Coronation Street's Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully, took the newcomer award, his second in the last month. Coronation Street creator Tony Warren won a special TV landmark award and was joined by Julie Goodyear, who played Bet Lynch. Simon Cowell missed out to Sharon Osbourne in the most popular expert category but The X Factor won most popular entertainment programme. Ant and Dec made their annual trip to the stage to collect their most popular entertainment presenter awards. Paul O'Grady won the most popular daytime programme award for his ITV chat show. Who Wants to be a Millionaire? host Chris Tarrant celebrated the show's fifth successive win in the most popular quiz show category.
