Comedian Ronnie Barker, who starred in The Two Ronnies, Open All Hours and Porridge, has died at the age of 76.

His comedy career began in radio and he appeared in 300 editions of The Navy Lark as AB Johnson.

Later in the 1960s, he joined John Cleese and Ronnie Corbett on The Frost Report, taking part in the famous Class Sketch.

He teamed up with Corbett for The Two Ronnies in 1971, and soon rivalled Morecambe and Wise as one of TV's top double acts.

The 12 series of The Two Ronnies ran for 15 years, mostly as the mainstay of BBC One's Saturday evening schedule.

Barker also appeared in a string of successful sitcoms, including Open All Hours with a young David Jason. The four series ran from 1976 to 1985.

Prison sitcom Porridge was another of his 1970s hits, and Barker considered it to be his best work. In it, he took a wry look at life inside as he was banged up with Richard Beckinsale (right).

He retired from showbusiness in 1988 but was tempted back to the spotlight almost 15 years later to play Churchill's butler in acclaimed drama The Gathering Storm.

Barker was honoured with a Bafta tribute last year, picking up the award flanked by Corbett and Jason.
