In pictures: Typhoon Tokage

Typhoon Tokage began churning towards Japan on Tuesday, the 10th major storm to hit the country this year.

Huge waves breached coastal defences as it moved into south-western Japan.

Bullet train services were suspended and domestic flights disrupted.

Residents in isolated areas had to be rescued as flood waters rose.
5 of 6
Areas of southern and western Japan are still under water, although the typhoon has now moved out to sea.

At least 55 people have been killed and rescuers are still searching for others missing in landslides and floods.
