Up to 2.5 million people evacuated the area ahead of the storm...

...though some stayed to take advantage of the powerful surf.

It was the second major storm to hit Florida in less than a month, coming hard on the heels of Hurricane Charley.

The storm had earlier battered the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas.
