| Labour conference 2001 - audio and video ![]() The Labour Party's annual gathering was cut short to allow for the recall of parliament. The crisis following the terror attacks on New York and Washington dominated the conference mood which was far more subdued and serious than normal. The Home Secretary, David Blunkett, has announced a sweeping overhaul of the asylum system. Work permits will be introduced with a fast track system put in place for those with skills in high demand. Speaking to the Labour conference in Brighton, he also said the law on incitement would be widened.
Tuesday 2 October
Tony Blair delivered a stern warning to the Taleban and a clear message that Britian would support American military action in Afghanistan. But his speech also touched on numerous other subjects from African poverty to the future of Britain's public services.
Benn warns against unilateral action
Labour veteran Tony Benn told the party conference any military action must be authorised by the UN Security Council and not taken unilaterally. Mr Benn received a standing ovation from delegates for what he said was "probably his last speech" to conference.
Monday 1 October
The government says it has frozen more than �60m of UK-based assets which have been linked to the Taleban regime in Afghanistan. Chancellor Gordon Brown told the Labour party conference that tough sanctions would be introduced to enable the government to seize funds.
