Every year secret government documents held for 30 years are finally released to the general public.

Leviathan, the BBC series that looked at the history behind the headlines, returns this year for a special programme: UK Confidential.

In the programme, broadcast at 1720 GMT on BBC Two on New Year's Day, documents relating to some of the biggest stories of 1970 will be revealed for the first time.

It will reveal the attitudes of government towards some of the year's key stories - and interview the people who actually formed the events of 1970.

UK Confidential is presented by three figures who remember the year well.

Edwina Currie, the former Conservative minister and now a BBC Rado Five Live presenter, remembers the year her hero Ted Heath took power - and whether it lived up to her expectations.

Veteran journalist and commentator Brian Walden was a Labour MP at the time. He takes us through some of the key moments in government in that year - and reflects on what it means for us today.

Finally, Peter Snow, one of the BBC's most senior journalists, delves into Britain's secret archives to find out the secrets behind one of the year's most explosive international news stories.

Documents revealed

On 1 January, BBC News Online will publish the true stories behind the headlines of 1970 in conjunction with UK Confidential on BBC Two. You will also be able to watch the programme from this website.
