| The final journey The final journey of Scotland's First Minister Donald Dewar will take him through the heart of his home city and his constituency Glasgow Anniesland. Arrangements are being made to ensure that as many people as possible can see the cortege after it leaves the funeral service being held at Glasgow Cathedral en route to Clydebank Crematorium. The service begins at 1430BST and is expected to last about 40 minutes. Along the way it will pass many places closely associated with the late first minister. The route includes Glasgow's George Square and Glasgow University before entering the first minister's constituency at its boundary on Byres Road. From there the cortege will travel along Great Western Road passing through Anniesland and Knightswood. A spokesman said: "Thousands of people have indicated they want to pay their last respects. "Not all can be accommodated at Glasgow Cathedral or the other two venues where the service is being transmitted. "The first minister's children Marion and Ian have agreed to the route for the cortege to give the people of Glasgow and the constituency an opportunity to say goodbye." The route from Cathedral Square:
Traffic restrictions will be in place in and around Glasgow from 1130BST on Wednesday. The following roads will be closed:
Kelvin Way, Glasgow, adjacent to the art gallery will be closed between University Avenue and Sauchiehall Street from 0001BST on Wednesday. Pedestrians attending the area to view the arrival and departure of the cortege will be allowed onto the west footpath of Castle Street and Cathedral Street areas. Limited access is also available at the front of the Cathedral. Members of the public are asked to follow directions and advice of police officers. The arrangements will cause inconvenience to those using private vehicles and public transport. The public are advised to add extra time for their journey and to avoid the area near the cathedral if possible. Visitors to Glasgow Royal Infirmary may find difficulty in accessing or parking in the immediate vicinity of the hospital by private and public transport. |
