More than 100,000 people have fled fighting in Sudan's western region of Darfur and crossed into neighbouring Chad.

Another 500,000 people have fled their homes but remain in Sudan, aid agencies say.

The land on both sides of the border is desolate, offering little shelter to those on the move. Some have walked for days.

The refugees have access to some medical care but not much.

The local Chadian population gave some help to the refugees but they too are poor.

Aid agencies have accused the Sudan Government of closing down centres intended to help those who have not crossed into Chad.
