The city of Deague has been plunged into mourning after an underground train fire left more than 125 dead.

Funerals have started taking place for the 45 victims identified so far.

But more than 300 people are still missing, and many families face an anxious wait for news.

South Korean President-elect Roh Moo-hyun, who takes office next Tuesday, visited the station where the fire broke out.

He also toured local hospitals to talk to some of the injured.

But many people are angry at the authorities, and accuse them of allowing safety procedures to lapse.

The fire, which was started deliberately by a local man, spread quickly through the two trains.

Some of the materials inside the carriages produced toxic fumes which are thought to have caused many of the deaths.

Subway officials have promised to install new safety equipment, but for many it is too late.
