Thousands of people left their villages in south Sudan during the 21-year civil war, often fleeing raids by Arab militia, army bombardments and subsequent food shortages.
Since the 2005 peace deal the many who sought refuge and work in the north or in neighbouring countries have been returning - to one of the least developed areas of the world.
In the province of Northern Bahr al-Ghazal, more than half the population is made of returnees.
Adhel Akot, 16, fled when her family house was burnt. Now back in her home village of Mathiang Dit she tells her story.
