Alexander Solzhenitsyn in 1974

Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn pictured in Cologne, West Germany in 1974. Solzhenitsyn, a former scientist who became one of the USSR's most outspoken critics, was expelled from the country for 20 years. On 27 May 1994, the Nobel Prize for Literature-winning writer returned to post-Soviet Russia. He died in 2008.
