Valued exposure: Martial law

A detachment of National Guardsmen

A detachment of National Guardsmen patrols past the Black First Baptist Church in Montgomery after martial law was declared following racial riots.

The trouble at the First Baptist Church erupted when a crowd of white men, women and children began throwing stones through the windows as black civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King was speaking.
