More than 700 million people are eligible to take part in the Indian general election - the world's biggest exercise in democracy - and for logistical reasons voting has to be staggered over a four week period.

For Radio 4's The World Tonight, Ritula Shah travelled across the state of Maharastra - from bustling Mumbai to the sleepy village of Asola - to see what issues voters are most concerned about.
