On this day in 1981 the Social Democratic Party was launched in the UK by the Gang of Four, the nick-name of four Labour defectors. Roy Jenkins, David Owen, Bill Rodgers and Shirley Williams faced a crowded press conference as they outlined their hopes of breaking the political mould and of making significant gains at the next General Election.
