The Duchess shares the charities' passion for helping children |
The Duchess of York has joined forces with burger giant McDonald's to promote the fast-food chain's World Children's Day as its global ambassador. Sarah Ferguson unveiled Europe's first Ronald McDonald "care mobile" in the Polish capital, Warsaw, ahead of the fundraising day on 20 November.
The unit will act as a medical screening centre for children across Poland.
In the US, the duchess also represents the slimming group WeightWatchers.
'Come together'
Critics of McDonald's argue the chain sells unhealthy and fattening foods at a time when obesity levels are soaring.
Speaking at the event in McDonald's first restaurant in Poland, the duchess - herself famous for battling her weight - said the company's Ronald McDonald House Charities "focused on the needs of children".
"I share Ronald McDonald House Charities' passion for helping children - and clearly, all of you do too," she told those gathered.
"One of the amazing things about RMHC is the way we come together - physicians, public health experts, educators, care providers, fundraisers and business leaders alike - all focused on the needs of children."
A spokeswoman for the duchess later said: "Her role is global ambassador and is about supporting these fundraising events and awareness efforts across the world which have a massive impact.
"Her only reason for being there is about the children. Her mission is to help children in need around the world. "
Ronald McDonald House Charities work in 48 countries providing medical care and support for sick children.
