The body of an Afghan child is prepared for burial

Danish photographer Erik Refner (Berlingske Tidens) won the prestigious World Press Photo of The Year award with this picture of the body of an Afghan refugee being prepared for burial.

Photographs of the World Trade Center attacks on 11 September and the war in Afghanistan dominated the news categories, but the winning image of the Afghan child was shot three months before the conflict began.

First Prize in the Spot News Singles category by French photographer Luc Delahaye, Magnum Photos for Newsweek, showing Afghan Northern Alliance troops ambushed by retreating Taleban forces on 12 November.

Second Prize in the Arts Stories category by photographer Shobha, Agenzia Contrasto/Focus. The picture is called Senegalese Haute Couture, Senegal, 2001.

Second Prize in the Sports Stories category - a black and white photo by Australian photographer Craig Golding of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper called Surf Lifesavers in Competition, 2001.
