Celebrity clinic treats former psychiatrist

Celebrity clinic: the Priory has treated sports stars and pop stars
A former prison psychiatrist who was jailed for assaulting his wife is serving his sentence in a health clinic used by celebrities.

Kevin McGuigan, a former specialist at Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight, was sentenced to 15 months for assault and firearms offences.

The 45-year-old, who treated Moors murderer Ian Brady and former gangster Ronnie Kray, is being treated at the Marchwood Priory, near Southampton.

A Prison Service spokeswoman would not comment on McGuigan's case but said the decision to send any patient there was a medical one.

He has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and is now being treated at the clinic at taxpayers' expense.

The Priory is reported to charge 2,500 for treatment and specialises in eating disorders and treating alcohol and drug habits.

It has become renown for its work with celebrities, among them Paul Gascoigne, Michael Barrymore and Paula Yates.

"Prisoners sectioned under the Mental Health Act are assessed by independent NHS psychologists and the prisoner's medical needs are the sole deciding factor," said the Prison Service spokeswoman.

Arms arsenal

She said a centre that would normally be used in such cases was currently full and that the Priory clinic was "comparable" in cost.

Isle of Wight Crown Court heard how McGuigan first attacked his wife Sophie when she refused to have sex with him after a night out.

He was said to have broken down the bedroom door, thrown her onto the bed and hit her.

When police were called to their home a small arsenal of illegal weapons, including a pump-action shotgun and sawn-off shotgun, was found.

A wallet embossed with the logo of the loyalist group the Ulster Defence Force was also discovered.
