Workmen demolishing the former East Glamorgan Hospital in south Wales are understood to have raised the alarm after finding clinical waste inside the building.
The 60-year-old hospital was closed down last year following the construction of the new Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The Health and Safety Executive was called in after a number of blood samples and some body parts - thought to be inner-ear bone samples and other human tissue - were found abandoned on the site. Investigating The Pontypridd and Rhondda NHS Trust, which is responsible for the hospital, confirmed they are investigating the find. Chief executive Margaret Foster said the alarm was raised last month after workmen made the discoveries. She said: "We are unhappy that we missed some things during the move to the new site and we will be investigating what has happened. "It should not have happened." She added that checks were carried out at the East Glamorgan Hospital site in Church Village to make sure nothing had been left behind. Further checks were made following the discoveries. The Health and Safety Executive confirmed it has asked the Trust to investigate the findings. |
