Fit workers 'would call in sick'
Cold
Most of those asked expected to stay at home with a minor ailment
Six out of every 10 workers would take a day off sick this month despite being fit to work, a survey indicates.

Of 1,000 workers asked, 13% - and 34% of those aged from 16 to 24 - plan to "pull a sickie" when there is nothing wrong with them at all.

And 60% will stay at home with minor ailments such as colds or hangovers.

But Developing Patient Partnerships, which conducted the poll with the Consumer Health Information Centre, says they do not need to miss work.

The health education charity has produced a free booklet, Managing common ailments at home and at work, to help get people back on their feet.

It includes advice on combating hangovers, handling stress and coping with coughs and colds.

Chairman Dr Simon Fradd said: "Many people waste time seeing their GP for minor ailments, particularly during winter, when in fact there is plenty that people can do for themselves.

Taking days off when not sick is wrong, but so is working when you should be at home in bed

"By using over-the-counter treatments with advice from pharmacists, people can feel better quicker without the hassle of going to the surgery.

"Pharmacists are experts in medicines and as a doctor I would recommend my patients get their advice on how to cope with minor ailments."

Consumer Health Education Centre spokesman Dr Ian Banks added: "You don't need to see your doctor for every medical condition.

"Simple health problems can be safely dealt with at home or work."
