Clinton Rogers reports on Kallie's struggle to survive
Kallie Rogers weighed less than half a bag of sugar when she was born 12 weeks premature, and doctors were convinced that - as one of the world's smallest babies - she could not survive.

Kallie had to be delivered by Caesarian section because she had stopped growing in her mother's womb. Her chances of survival were also lessened by the fact that her mother had undergone a kidney transplant operation some years earlier.

At ten months she is still only the size and weight of the average new born.

Dr Stella Imong, a consultant paediatrician, said: "I thought she is too small to survive. But I can also remember saying to the junior doctors the only way she is going to pull through is if we all leave her alone and do as little as possible.

"If she is going to survive is going to be because she has the strength to survive."

Kallie's mother Sheila Westlake said: "I never thought we would have this chance, but we have, and I am absolutely thrilled."

Kallie is still on medication for a weak liver, but it is hoped she will grow up to lead a normal life.
