| Thursday, 30 August, 2001, 16:11 GMT 17:11 UK Bites of mystery fly closes park ![]() A black fly is believed to have caused the bites Experts are trying to identify a black fly after four visitors to a country park suffered an extreme reaction to insect bites. Kingsbury Water Park in Warwickshire has been closed while the investigation takes place. Four visitors in four days suffered an extremely rare allergic reaction. Three needed hospital treatment. Experts believe the insect responsible for the four cases of anaphylactic shock could be a black fly, although attempts to confirm the theory are continuing. Site survey The local authority said the popular beauty spot has been closed indefinitely as a precautionary measure. A Warwickshire County Council spokesman said representatives from the authority, Warwickshire Health Authority's public health department and North Warwickshire Borough Council's environmental health department were assessing the problem. "Given that a fourth case had occurred on Sunday elsewhere in the park, a decision was made to close the park to enable further investigations into the source of the bites," the spokesman said. "The county entomologist is surveying the site to try and identify what species of insect is causing the problems.
Warwickshire Health Authority has reported a general increase in people attending hospital with insect bites, the council spokesman added. Sally Silk, the council's country parks visitor manager, said test results, due to be released on Thursday, were expected to confirm exactly what type of insect was involved. "Four people going down with anaphylactic shock in four days seemed fairly substantial and we thought we ought to get to the bottom of it before we kept encouraging people to come and visit us," she said. "It might just be an unhappy coincidence and we are waiting for the results of the tests." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Health stories now: Links to more Health stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||
