| Monday, 18 June, 2001, 23:30 GMT 00:30 UK NHS 'robbed of talent by racism' ![]() Think tank says ethnic minority doctors face racism daily Dr Shahid Dadabhoy says he has experienced racism throughout his career in medicine. But Dr Dadabhoy, who wrote a chapter about his experiences in the King's Fund book 'Racism in Medicine', published on Tuesday, says he feels people from ethnic minorities should fight against racism, and not be deterred from going into medicine. Dr Dadabhoy, 32, says: "The NHS should be a meritocracy. It is robbed of a lot of talent by racism." But he says he has had a better experience than his father, who came to work in the UK from India, via Pakistan, in 1967. His father's attitude had been "put up and shut up", and simply accept he would face racism, said Dr Dadabhoy. He attended public school and at interviews was told he had "good English for an Asian".
"There are a lot of cultural barriers to what you can and can't do. If you don't drink and you're from a particular culture, you don't access, information gets smaller and smaller." He said sometimes the racism was overt. He told of the time a colleague was in a tutorial, where the teacher referred to a helpline where all you would get was a "stupid Paki". 'Racist minority Even now, in practice with his father in Chingford, north London, Dr Dadabhoy says he comes across racism. "The majority of patients are fine, but there are a significant minority who are racist." "One patient made an overtly racist remark in front of me, and I just threw him off my list." He said he would allow his two-year-old daughter to go into the NHS if she wanted to. "Whatever profession, including the NHS, that any son or daughter wished to go into, I would encourage them to go into it, whatever racism there is in that profession, and actually face it out," he said. |
