Police have sent details of the hospital death of a 91-year-old to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The woman, from Lee-on-Solent died at Gosport's War Memorial Hospital in Hampshire 1998.

The file was sent to the CPS after complaints from the patient's family about the care she had received at the hospital.

A police spokeswoman said that officers had been collecting statistics from the hospital, which covered the period when the woman died, but said that had been done as a matter of routine.

She added: "We have received no other complaints and we have not reviewed or asked for any other hospital files.

"We are only looking at this one incident."

She confirmed that police had completed their investigation into the 91-year-old's death which occurred in August 1998.

The patient had been cared for at the Royal Haslar Hospital, Gosport before being transferred to the War Memorial Hospital.

Her medical condition is not being revealed.

The police said both hospitals were co-operating fully with the investigation.

Portsmouth Healthcare NHS Trust operational director Ian Piper said: "This is the only case we are aware of that police are investigating and we have co-operated fully with that investigation and will continue to do so.

"The papers and report are currently lodged with the CPS and we are awaiting their verdict, at which point, if they identify a case to answer to, we will obviously take appropriate action."
