Many young people prefer fizzy drinks to tap water
A third of children never drink water and almost a half do not get a daily dose of fruit and vegetables, according to a new survey.
The seven-year survey of 14,000 children found that children preferred fizzy drinks. The government recommends that children eat five pieces of fruit or vegetables a day.
Asthma
The survey by the Institute of Child Health at Bristol University also found that one in three children under seven is suffering from the symptoms of asthma.
It launches a week-long series of BBC programmes on children's health. The series will focus on issues such as meningitis, deafness and head lice.
A spokesman for the BBC said: "Some of the findings of the survey raise serious questions about the future health of children.
"A lot of the major childhood killers were conquered earlier this century, but we must not rest on our laurels. Obesity and diet are major problems in children."
