Jersey hosts 152 year old regatta

Gorey Harbour
The regatta takes place in Gorey Harbour on Saturday and Sunday

Jersey celebrates the 152nd Gorey regatta this weekend, continuing the island tradition which started in 1857.

Boats of varying sizes will compete for cups in 19 classes, on courses starting from and returning to Gorey Harbour.

Regatta Association vice-captain Ian Simpson said: "There are fantastic cups to win going back to the 30s and 40s, they're solid silver and valuable."

The event is scheduled in the sailing calendar according to tides, to allow boats from St Helier to sail over.

Mr Simpson said: "We've got about 20 boats in the cruiser fleet and about the same in the dinghies, but this year we don't have any catamarans because it clashes with another event."

The Gorey Regatta was first noted in The Chroniques and The Jersey Times in 1857 when it took place on Monday 31st August and Tuesday 1st September.

Boats from the Channel Islands and France competed with swimming races for the children.

The regatta takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
