All clothes will have the UK's 17.% tax levied on them |
Marks & Spencer in Jersey is to price all clothing at UK prices when the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) comes in. The M&S franchise, run by Sandpiper CI, currently sells clothing priced below 15 at UK prices, including an extra 17.5% - the equivalent of the UK's VAT. This pricing policy will be expanded to all clothes, despite GST only being 3%. Sandpiper said the reason the policy was being expanded was that operating in Jersey was more expensive than operating in the UK. The 3% GST, which includes food and clothing, comes into force on 6 May. GST is being introduced to cover the financial shortfall from a new zero-rate corporation tax.
