Minister in plea on finance laws
Jersey's chief minister has asked the US government not to include Jersey in laws that he fears could damage the finance industry.

Jersey is included on a list of tax havens that are being examined by the US Senate.

But Senator Frank Walker told a senate committee the island actively discouraged tax evasion and complied with international laws and standards.

He said any laws would be unfair and discriminatory.

Jersey has already signed an ageement with the US government to exchange information on tax issues.

Mr Walker said: "It is no part of Jersey's policy to assist directly or indirectly the evasion of taxes properly payable in other jurisdictions.

"Such business is actively discouraged."
