Housing wait may be brought down
People may have to live in Jersey for a shorter period of time before gaining residential status.

The States is being asked to decide whether to reduce the housing qualification period.

Currently people must be continually resident in Jersey for 13 years to get housing qualifications. The States is being asked to reduce that to 12.

The qualification system was introduced in 1980 to discourage people from settling on the island.

This led to concerns that a two-tier housing system was operating in the island because people who do not have residential status can only rent in the non-qualified sector.

In 2005 the States agreed the time should be cut from 15 years to 14 years. Last year it was reduced again from 14 years to 13 years.

The States wants to get the qualifications down to 10 years by 2010.
