Airport duty free plan questioned
Chamber of Commerce members are being surveyed on whether they believe it is a good idea to expand duty free sales at Jersey Airport.

Jersey Airport is considering opening its duty free area to arriving passengers as well as departures.

The Chamber is concerned about the effect it would have on tax revenues and local businesses.

Their newsletter asks members whether the move may be going ahead without being challenged.

Members are asked if they think the Economic Development Department could do more to look into the issue.

The airport plans to increase duty free sales aims to reduce the amount it has to charge passengers to land in Jersey.

Consumers would also pay less for cigarettes and alcohol.

The Chamber of Commerce said more duty free sales would mean less tax revenue for the Health Department's alcohol and tobacco strategy, and less money raised for the Tax Department.
