Group calls for elderly fuel help

The payment could help ensure the elderly keep their homes warm
A winter fuel allowance should be paid to elderly people living in Jersey, according to a national charity.

Daphne Minihane, the head of Age Concern in the island, said the payment could help to save lives by allowing people to keep warm.

Social Security Minister Senator Paul Routier has said the system would be too expensive.

But Senator Ben Shenton wants an amendment made to the Strategic Plan to introduce a similar scheme to the UK.

Ms Minihane is backing the amendment and said it was "vital" the proposal was approved.

A 200 winter fuel payment is given to senior citizens in the UK, with people over the age of 80 receiving 300.
