Under the plans, every resident in Jersey will be included on a register |
Jersey's housing system needs to be completely reviewed, according to one island senator. Senator Stuart Syvret wants to set up a committee of inquiry to investigate the island's accommodation industry.
Senator Syvret is unhappy with the proposed migration policy put forward by the Policy and Resources Committee.
He said it was "putting the cart before the horse", and called for a full review before the new system is debated by the States on 5 April.
He said: "I am going to bring a proposition to the States that will seek to establish a committee of inquiry to investigate the accommodation industry, particularly so from a fiscal and taxation point of view.
Residents' register
"I think it is important we do this, not only for environmental reasons and for scoping the nature of people's accommodation in the island, but from a taxation point of view as well."
Senator Syvret is unhappy at the close link between a person's job and where they can live and is concerned that employers could take an unfair advantage of the situation.
The Policy and Resources Committee announced plans last week to register every person living in Jersey.
Under the scheme there would be three categories of residents - those with and without housing qualifications, and those licensed to live and work in Jersey.
The committee said the proposals would support sustainable growth, and create a fairer system.
Under the plans, the qualifying period to be allowed to purchase a house would also be reduced from 15 to 10 years.
