Some manual workers in Jersey may not have guaranteed job security after a breakdown in talks between their union and the States. The Transport and General Workers' Union says the States is taking too long to make a judgement and members now want independent arbitration.
But Senator Frank Walker says the States will only go to arbitration if it is for a two-year deal.
He says jobs cannot be guaranteed if the award is more than 2.5%
Mr Walker, who is president of the Policy and Resources department, is urging union representatives to come back to negotiations, and ballot members on the States offer.
