First smoke-free pub for island?
Jersey could have its first non-smoking pub by next spring.

The Ann Street Brewery says it is seriously considering making its new development at the Cock and Bottle in St Helier a smoke-free zone.

The news comes as more UK pubs are banning smoking. Over 250 pubs owned by Greene King have taken a similar step.

Now the Ann Street group, which is owned by Channel Island Traders, has looked at the chain of pubs it has in Jersey.

Chief Executive Paul Smith said they all comply with guidelines on air conditioning and making people aware of non-smoking areas.

But he says the new development at the Cock and Bottle could become the first full-time non-smoking pub in the island.

He says it would not be fair to impose a ban on an existing pub, but could be acceptable at a new development.

Last year the States approved plans in principle for smoking to be banned in restaurants and cafes, but rejected proposals to include pubs and nightclubs in the ban.
