A poor diet is blamed for the growing rate of childhood obesity |
Jersey's education and health bodies are considering asking islanders for ideas for new schemes to promote good diet and exercise for children. It follows widespread concern about childhood obesity.
Many Jersey primary schools are already playing their part in promoting healthy lifestyles among children.
They do not allow pupils to have sugary fizzy drinks and they give guidelines on what children should have in their lunch boxes.
Healthy options
Karen Le Cornu, from the island's Health Promotion Unit, said peer pressure was still a problem though.
"A lot of parents find it difficult to send their children into school with a healthy snack when all the other children have got things like crisps and chocolate.
"All the teachers have been surprised how much children enjoy it when you go into schools and offer them healthy options.
"Because all the children are doing the same, they are much more likely to take it."
