Lord Falconer will discuss Jersey's constitution |
The Lord Chancellor visited Jersey on Monday. Lord Falconer toured the States buildings and discussed the island's constitutional position with the Bailiff and other States members.
The visit comes amid pressure by the UK Government to modernise the island's constitution.
Lord Falconer is the UK's Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and is also responsible for reform in the House of Lords.
Referendum question
Jersey set up its independent constitution about 800 years ago, but retains strong links to the Crown.
The legislative process has already started to change since a decision was taken two and half years ago to set up a ministerial-style government.
But questions remain over whether the offices of Deputies, who represent individual parishes and Senators, who are elected across the island, should remain.
The Procedures Committee, which is responsible for bringing forward change, says it wants to hold a referendum this year on that issue.
Lord Falconer also met representatives of the Financial Services Commission and have lunch at St Helier Parish Hall.
