Jersey Telecom says its new tariffs are fairer |
Jersey Telecom cannot be forced to change its decision to increase line rental costs, say politicians in charge of regulating business practices. The company has been criticised by some residents after changing its tariffs.
Deputy Gerald Voisin says the Economic Development Committee can only ask the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority to consider the matter.
He says it is inappropriate for the States to make commercial decisions and direct the business regulator.
Jersey Telecom is changing its Prime Talk tariff to stop people aged over 65 automatically getting a discounted monthly line rental of 1.46.
The full line rental of 10.33, with a discount only available to people who make less than 5 worth of calls a month.
Jersey Telecom says the new tariffs will produce a fairer system.
