The Agile frog can only be found at one habitat in Jersey |
The future of Agile frogs in Jersey is still at risk despite a programme to breed them in captivity, according to a group which tries to protect them. Jersey is the only place in the British Isles where the frog is still found.
More than 80 are being released into the wild after being bred from spawn collected by the Agile Frog Group.
But the group says the future of the breed is still at risk from poor water quality, feral cats and increasing levels of housing development.
Standing jump
Thirty years ago, the Agile frog lived in at least seven different sites in the British Isles, but by last year the frogs were only found at one habitat in Jersey.
In April, the group decided to collect a clamp of spawn which could be hatched and therefore protected from other predators.
Three captive breeding compounds were constructed at the Frances le Sueur Centre in St Ouen using cash from the Ecology Fund.
The Agile frog can perform a two-metre standing jump, thanks to its long back legs.
Its colouring ranges from green to light brown and it has a black strip across its eyes.
