Island inflation is twice UK rate
The cost of living in Jersey is rising by twice as much as it is in the UK.

New figures show prices have risen by 18% in the last four years, with the cost of food going up the most.

In the last year alone, the cost of food has gone up by seven times the amount it has in the UK according to the States Statistics Unit.

The cost of smoking and motoring has also risen significantly, but there has been a drop in the price of clothes, with a 2% fall in the last year.

A loaf of bread is now 15% more expensive than it was a year ago.

But although the price of milk is still much higher in Jersey than in Britain, it has not gone up by as much, with an average pint costing 56p compared with 35p.

Housing costs, by far the largest influence on the overall inflation rate, have risen by 43% since the year 2000, but in contrast to the UK, that increase has been driven by the cost of renting rather than buying.
