A ceremony will be held at Noirmont Point for the anniversary |
A war memorial commemorating the deaths of Allied and German soldiers is to be unveiled in Jersey. The stone structure on Noirmont Point will mark the 60th anniversary of the deaths of 20 service personnel during the Second World War.
It is currently being built on the south east side of the point.
On 9 August, 1944, a convoy of German boats was transporting field guns from Guernsey towards the east of the island when it was ambushed by American vessels.
One of the American boats rammed a German minesweeper. The US vessel eventually sank, killing 14 of its 15 crew less than a mile from Noirmont.
Two other Americans and four Germans also lost their lives during the ambush.
The memorial will be unveiled in time for a service on the 60th anniversary of the attack, which it is hoped will involve veterans and members of the United States Navy.
